Made to Order - M Design Workshop

M Design is an Artisan Workshop based in Italy that offers Bespoke or Made to Order footwear ranging from sneakers to loafers and even boots. Each pair is made entirely by hand, without the use of machines and features both vegetable tanned leather uppers and handmade Para Rubber soles. This modern take on a classic silhouette especially caught my eye. I dig the updated, quality materials and old-time craftsmanship.

So, if you are in the market for unique, one-of-a-kind kicks for summer you can check them out here.

1.) Authentic Wear: Rogue Territory | DBL Indigo ISC Work Shirt

This year my wife and I got to spent Memorial Day Weekend at the cabin in Northern MN with her family. On Monday, after having breakfast with the In-Laws, and a cup of coffee on the dock, I grabbed my camera from our room along with my Rogue Territory DBL Indigo ISC Work Shirt and headed back down by the lake to shoot a few photos.
Last August, after I heard Karl would be doing a second run of this ISC Work Shirt, I had to grab one before they all disappeared. Now with almost a year of daily to weekly wear and 4 cold water washes, the indigo is starting to show some pretty heavy fades that should only get better as we head into summer.

Style Seek "Review Series" Nike Roshe Run Trail

Style Seek "Review Series"

The guys over at Style Seek asked me to participate in their ongoing "Review Series".

You've heard of Style Seek right? That cool new website where you can create a personalized account in order to explore thousands of different product photos and trends. You can also shop and purchase most items directly through Style Seek and even save your favorites in order to check them out later. It also tracks your interests in order to build your unique StyleDNA.

For the "Review Series" I had my choice between a few different items and finally decided on the "Black on Black" Nike Roshe Run Trail. The product photos on Nike's online shop are pretty basic so I shot a few of my own.

I received this pair of Roshe Run Trail about two weeks ago and have worn them almost everyday since and I love them. From the heel collar shown above which seems to be some sort of memory foam that molds to fit your ankle, down to the heel and toe mud guards shown below.

Now I should admit I just recently took the photos you see here and you can barely tell the shoes have been worn. And as you may know I currently live in the "Great State of Wisconsin" which right now isn't such a "great place" to be if you've seen the temperatures on the news over the last week. So believe me when I tell you I've put them to the test.

From wearing them to my weekly crossfit classes, through a few sketchy hallways during a couple of late nights in Minneapolis and even while digging through the snowbank in my front yard a few nights ago after dropping my spare key. And when they got dirty I was able to simply wipe off the dirt, mud, snow, weight lifting chalk or anything else I could throw at them with just a damp rag.

The outer textile body of the Nike Roshe Run Trail has a water-resistant coating keeping my foot dry and features the Solarsoft liner to insulate my foot while staying breathable enough to prevent overheating.

Now I'm not sure if it was on purpose but if you notice in the photo above the Nike Swoosh on the pull tabs sewn to the tongue of the shoe are mismatched. With one being right side up and the other upside down, making this pair truly unique.....hopefully.

Pros:

The Price: at only $85.00 they are well worth the $$.

-Durable laces, materials and construction.

-Water-resistant coating.

-Easy cleaning: simply wipe down with a wet cloth.

-Trail inspired high traction sole: surprising grip even on snow and ice.

-Sturdy front and rear pull tabs.

-Comfortable Phylon midsole and durable rubber outsole with removable bright colored ripple insoles.

-Front and rear rubber mud guards.

Cons:

-Being all black I believe they show dirt a little more than the other colors would but as stated above cleaning couldn't be more simple.

-While I like the pop of color the removable insole provides it tends to attract lint.

-The fact that I only have one pair.

Product Review: Hammer Made

A boutique style menswear store in Edina, Mn. Directed by founder Jason Hammerberg, the company designs and sells limited run men's shirts and accessories in a wide range of hand-picked fabrics. By maintaining close relationships with high quality mills and manufacturers they are able to cut out the middle man and sell great shirts at a great price.

I recently had the opportunity to receive and review one of the many shirts Hammer Made has to offer. I simply had to e-mail my address and measurements.

After referring to the size chart provided on the Hammer Made Online Shop I had my wife help me take some simple measurements from this online guide which I then sent to Dawn Hardrict of Hammer Made who has been working with me on this project. A few days later I received this great shirt.

My measurements lined up almost exactly with those provided on the site so I was excited to try on the shirt. Thankfully, the fit was almost perfect. The sleeve length as well as the length of the sides, front and back are spot on. This makes it very wearable both tucked in or untucked. I also think the spread collar is perfect, being very sturdy on its own as well as offering a slot for collar stays.

My only concern was the width of the shirt in the mid body. Being ever so slightly looser than I personally prefer, considering my slender build. So, I simply took the Woven in Italy, 100% Cotton shirt and tossed it in the wash, set the dial to warm instead of cold and pressed start, hoping for it to tighten up just a bit. When finished I hung it on a hanger to dry overnight.
The shirt now fits me perfectly, no exceptions.

Pros:
Attention to detail
Sturdy spread collar and cuffs
Comfortable material
Great overall fit and finish

Cons:
Minor pilling after washing

Overall, this shirt is great and easily a new favorite in my wardrobe. I definitely wouldn't mind picking up a few more.

Worth the wait...

Two weeks ago, I flew into MSP on Monday night around 10:30pm . Making Tuesday, ready or not, my first day back to work. I spent the next few days focusing on my job and editing photos at night when I had extra time. I was hoping to have at least a few posts up before the weekend. Unfortunately things went a little different.

I spent Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, yup Monday too and a little bit of Tuesday feeling like I just got hit and backed over by a crazy ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend's truck.  Ok, maybe thats a slight exaggeration but I did spend almost 5 whole days in bed with a serious case of the flu.

Anyway i'm kicking again...

I spent a few hours earlier that same Monday in New York with Dillon Burke of Thread & Salt. The weather was sunny and warm which is rare considering it was December 2. Dillon and I had planned to meet for a quick breakfast/lunch and then shoot some photos. We met at Johny's Luncheonette near my Hotel in Chelsea. After which we set out. Being new to the city, I took the passenger seat and let him lead the way. We made a quick stop to check out a local thrift store and didnt find anything that caught our eye so we hit the streets again. We walked a little more and soon ran across this cool little park and wasted no time getting a few shots.

Dillon was wearing a -knock you down sick for 5 days- pair of Rogue Territory RK ISC Trousers. The trousers are a collaboration between Karl owner/operator of Rogue Territory and friend Ryan Plett of Style Seek. I'm sure by the time you read this the pants will be completly sold out, being their were only 2 pairs left when I checked the site over a week ago. I instantly regretted posting a sneak peek photo on Instagram showing the amazing fades these have going before snagging a pair of my own. I did however pick up a work shirt of the same material a few months back when the second release of the Trouser and Work Shirt dropped. So, I think i'll survive until hopefully a 3rd edition.
Dillon's pair are 1st edition and have a little over a year's worth of truly unique wear and tear with one recent dry clean.

This may seem like a long time to spend getting a pair of pants to looks this great. Why not just pick up a pre-distressed pair? Yeah, i've been there. And so has almost every other guy considering new denim or pants this style. The first pair can be a hurdle believe me. But, I promise you. That's all it will take. Just be sure to spend some time researching brands, fits and measurement. This is an investment. You want to get the perfect pair, for you.

Style Note: Put the time in.

It takes hard work, dedication and some serious time to break-in an item of raw denim or canvas. But knowing that you put in the time can give you a sense of confidence and pride in what you are wearing and it creates a solid foundation to build off. Which then allows you to take risks in other areas of your wardrobe.

Stacks on stacks.

Style Note: Chukka boots.

Another question I often find in my inbox "What are some alternatives to sneakers or the traditional low-cut shoes?". Chukkas are the answer. They are a little taller than a wingtip or brogue and more weather resistance without the bulk or height of a boot. Just hunt down the right pair and you can wear them with just about anything for many moons.

Style Note: Tote it along.

Its great to have a place to put a few extra thing like a jacket or a blazer. You know, just in case it gets cold later. It is December after all. Or in case you get a call back on that job interview. Now, because you thought ahead, you're ready and you don't have to hop a train across town to your apartment first.

Stepping away: The Midwestyle

On Friday, while in New York this past weekend, I got the opportunity to meet Jeff Kieslich, 1/3 of The Midwestyle.

After meeting and talking for a bit we ended up making plans to shoot some photos the next day. We met up again on Saturday afternoon, during day 2 of the fifth annual Pop Up Flea. Since opening at 11am and being heavily crowded with people throughout the day, the temperature inside the studio had quickly risen to at least 70 plus degrees. So we didn't need much persuading to hit the streets in search of a worthy spot.

After walking only 2 blocks we were drawn to a vacant courtyard, which sat in the center of 4 tall, brick apartment buildings. We decided this would do.

Style Note: Rolled hems.

I get a lot of questions from guys wondering how to get the right look. My advise is to keep in simple. Like Jeff did here.
Straight and/or slim fit jeans tend to work best for this type of look. Start by rolling the hem once around the bottom adjusting the height of the roll to suit your preference as you go. Then, give it one more and leave it. I prefer to keep a smaller roll and have it look like I didn't put much thought into it. On the other hand, some guys (usually when worn with boots) like a little more refined look. To achieve this, simply make sure the hem is even all the way around when rolling it. And by pressing the hem between your thumb and index finger to flatten the crease. You can also just roll the hem once for a cleaner look. A good rule of thumb is to have it hit about an inch or two above the tops of your shoes.

Style Note: Don't be afraid of accessories.

A scarf ,when worn correctly, can be a great addition to any look.

Is a scarf not your thing? Then let your wrist-wear do the talking.

 Now, kick rocks!
